Need a Nap? Don't Feel Guilty!

By Genevieve Cunningham

When was the last time you had a really good nap? For some people, the answer is probably sometime when you were a kid. As adults, we don't get to nap much. We're too busy or don't have a good opportunity. Unfortunately, most of us are so tired that we could really benefit from a little rest. But there's something about taking a nap midday that just makes us feel guilty. We have a million things to do, and napping can wait! But maybe we have it all wrong. Maybe by getting in a little nap, we'll actually get more done. If you find yourself tired and rundown more often than not, take a look at why you shouldn't feel guilty about getting a nap every day.

Naps Restore Energy

If you need a nap in the middle of the day, it's because you're tired. Luckily, taking a nap can help restore your energy. The key is to take a nap of appropriate length. Studies suggest that the perfect nap length for boosting energy is between 20 and 30 minutes. Even though this doesn't seem like long, it's enough to perk you up and help you make it through the rest of the day.

Naps Enhance Focus

When you're well rested, your ability to focus is so much better. And since most people need a nap in the middle of the day, you're probably going to appreciate the improvement in focus that it brings. Afternoon work tasks might get a little easier. Paying attention to important tasks will get easier. Losing focus happens, but it can make your day much harder. Gain it back with a quick power nap, and you may find that you're more productive than ever.

Naps Help Your Mood

No one likes to be in a bad mood. Luckily, taking a nap can stop a bad mood and turn your attitude around. If you find that your mood fades as the day goes on, adding a nap into the routine may be all it takes to stabilize moods, restore energy, and feel better for the rest of the day.

Don't be ashamed to take a nap when you need it. We all get tired and rundown. We all need more rest from time to time. And as it turns out, a good nap may bring more benefits than you thought. Plan a little power nap into your day, and you can reap these benefits (and possibly more!) with nothing more than a little rest and recuperation.
