Working With Your Hands May Help In Hard Times

By Tom Herrin

Just about everyone experiences some difficult times.  It may be related to work, family, school, or any other kind that may be dealt.  Some people really struggle with whatever it is, others try to blow it off the best they can.  Either way, these stresses manage to take a toll on everyone.  If people can manage to find a way to deal with it in a positive way, they can most likely come out stronger and with better coping skills.  One way that many people may never give much thought to as a coping mechanism is crafting; that is, creating things with their hands.  It can be a great way to accomplish several things while finding some real enjoyment.

It Can Shift Attention

When people become involved in crafting, they may find that it takes quite a bit of concentration.  Working with the hands can be pretty tedious as people strive to make their hands do some of the finer details.  It also requires some mental ability to imagine the finished product and the steps that it takes to get there.  With the amount of attention that must be given to all of this, other everyday distractions may seem to disappear.  When someone becomes so focused on an activity, they sometimes even block out sounds.  That is not all bad.

It Can Slow Problems With Mental Aging

Anytime people use their minds to develop and use skills, there is learning of new information involved.  When this happens, people often become sharper in their general thinking skills.  This can be a great help in avoiding dementia much the same as exercise helps to avoid physical problems.  What is even better is that studies show that this kind of development can have an effect that can last for several years.

Crafting Is Not Just For The Highly Skilled

Just about anyone who has a desire to participate in crafting probably can.  All they need to do is browse through a magazine, store, or fair to get some ideas about what may be available.  Many things can be purchased as beginner kits.  Once people start out and get a feel for it, they often decide that they want to improve those skills.  They may do this by sharing with others, attending classes, or joining some group.  Sharing is always a great way and provides some social contact as well.  If you find yourself in hard times, working with your hands may be just the thing to provide some relief.
