A Frown Shouldn't Stand in the Way of Better Health

By Tom Herrin

In the whole scheme of things, a simple facial expression should not be a big deal.  The thing is that people look for all kinds of cures for many problems.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to recognize that people who smile are often seen as warm and inviting.  Who doesn’t love to deal with people with a smile on their face.  Whether it is retail businesses, offices, or teachers, those who smile can brighten the day for the rest of the world.  The thing is that those smiles may do far more for the one who smiles than they may realize.

It May Give You More Appeal

Others often see a smile as a sign of empathy.  The one who smiles seems to understand the struggles of others.  Half the time people smile, others smile back in return.  A smile is thought to make a person appear younger.  It is said that men are more likely to approach women who smile than those who make eye contact.  People who smile are thought to be more trustworthy.  For students, teachers who smile will get better results as students are more confident that their efforts will be appreciated and accepted.

It May Make Work More Enjoyable

Studies have shown that people who smile more may be more creative.  They may be better at solving problems related to their tasks.  They also seem to enjoy their work more, making the time pass more easily.  Their upbeat moods can lift the spirits of others, making a better work environment.  People who smile more are known to be offered more opportunities for advancement.

Better Health Is Available

The act of smiling can have an impact on health.  It can relax the body, making it more capable of reacting to factors that may cause illness.  This improves the immune system.  It is well known that people with positive attitudes are better able to deal with some diseases.  It can also lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Both of these are common problems that afflict countless numbers of people.  According to one study, people who smile more may be able to increase their longevity as much as seven years.  Take a look at yourself.  If you don’t smile already, try doing it as much as possible.  The payoff may outweigh the investment many times over.
