Put Color Back in Your Life for Better Health

By Tom Herrin

For those who may feel that they are living a black and white life, there is more to it.  Many are consistent in everything including their meals.  When people get into a routine of meat, potatoes, and bread, they start expecting it every day.  It isn't all that bad, but it is not very diverse either.  A lot of the time, a diet is something that gets little planning but just happens.  People may eat meals out of habit or convenience.  If they are wanting to make some good changes to create healthier meals, the simplest way may be to add color.

Start With Some Blue

While a few years ago people didn't give much thought to it, blue or purple foods have quite a bit to offer.  They are promoted almost everywhere.  They may appear at breakfast, snacks, or other meals.  Some of their benefits are the high amounts of antioxidants, they are thought to boost memory, and they can help fight inflammation.  Foods in this group include eggplant, purple cabbage, plums, blueberries, and figs.  They can do a lot to enhance the flavor of many dishes.

Red Foods Are Powerful

Everyone knows that when they see the color red it represents something bold.  Who doesn't notice a fire truck when they see it?  These foods have a lot to offer.  Some of the things they are recognized for are reducing their risk of diabetes, cutting their risk of heart disease, and improving the skin.  Other than possibly tomatoes, many people don't see them ordinarily on the plates.  Some of the other foods are red peppers, red onions, strawberries, cherries, and watermelons.  They may make some pretty good additions to ordinary meals.

Dressing up Meals and Making Them Healthier in One Step

Adding color to meals can make them more attractive.  We have all seen pictures on menus that seem to jump right off of it.  They can be appealing to the eye and taste good at the same time.  We enjoy making our meals more colorful.  It is easy and can be fun for everyone in the family.  Letting the kids draw and color meals can get them involved.  Once they do this, they may be more likely to be willing to try new foods.  Most of the time, that is the most difficult hurdle to overcome.  Try to see for yourself.
