Milk Should Work for You, Not Against
By Tom Herrin
It seems as if the more we try to make good choices, the more we have obstacles thrown in our faces. Milk is a staple in the diets of all children and should be present. Children begin life drinking milk as their main source of nutrition and continue to drink large amounts of it as they go through school. It is required to be on every tray given to students in the federal meals programs. It is known to help build strong bodies and encourage good growth. As we get older, we often drink less milk. Some people even leave it off of their diets completely. In some cases, we should continue to drink it on a regular basis. In others, it may be better to look for a good substitute.
Milk and Adults
As adults, many of us may still benefit by drinking milk. For many years, we were encouraged to drink skim milk in order to avoid the fat. In more recent times, some studies have indicated that the fat in milk may actually help to raise levels of good cholesterol. In addition, it may be good for blood pressure. It has a fair amount of potassium. Potassium is known to help blood vessels to expand. This can help keep blood pressure at desired levels.
The Sick Factor in Milk
Some people have to pretty much steer clear of milk. This may be due to issues they have with lactose. Others may have issues with one of the proteins in milk. We are fortunate in that there are some good products on the market that are considered to be lactose-free. There are quite a few kinds of this. Some producers have also been able to offer milk that has only the A2 protein. It is labeled as such and has become pretty popular.
Drink It If You Can
For those who are able to tolerate cows' milk, it can be a healthy drink. It is packed with protein and has relatively few calories. It can be filling since it also has a high water content. It is thought to be a good help for those who are trying to manage weight. Some alternative products are on the market as well. Almond milk is very high in calcium and available in many flavors. I like the vanilla flavor. I drink a glass each night before I go to bed to help boost my calcium levels.
