How You Can Stop Eating Junk Food

By Sara Butler

Junk food isn’t a technical term, but you don’t have to be technical to know what it is! These foods are often high in calories and fat, without any real health benefits to speak of. These pre-packaged convenience foods can make it difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, which contributes to the development of chronic disease. If you find yourself craving junk food, here are a few ways you can try to curb that craving.

Have a Balanced Breakfast

Starting your day with healthy foods is a great way to begin your day right. In fact, a filling breakfast can help pave the way for better food choices all day long.

If you don’t often have breakfast, start small. Have a small glass of milk, a piece of fruit, perhaps some cottage cheese. Even whole grain toast with peanut butter is a good choice. Once you get into the habit of having breakfast, you can begin to introduce other foods such as eggs. Remember, a breakfast filled with healthy protein and good fats will really help you through the morning and onto lunch.

Just Don’t Buy It

There’s an easy way to stop eating junk food: Make it inaccessible. If it’s not around, then you simply won’t be tempted to eat it. Instead of junky snacks around your home or in your office, replace them with better ones such as fruit, nuts, and even vegetables.

Buy Healthy Foods

When you’re at the store, stay away from the middle aisles. Instead, stick to the perimeter of the store where you can find lean proteins, healthy fats, and fresh (or frozen) fruits and vegetables. Explore different ways to enjoy foods that are new to you and you won’t even notice that there’s no junk food around!

Don’t Eat Mindlessly

Mindless eating happens when you’re doing something else such as sitting in front of your computer, watching TV, or texting on your smartphone. Mindless eating is often connected with junk food, which isn’t healthy. When you reach for a snack, think about if you really want it or if you’re just looking for something to do.

Hydrate!

One way to give junk food the boot is to make sure you’re well hydrated. Get a refillable water bottle and sip all day long. Before you know it, your cravings for unhealthy foods will be a thing of the past!

You don’t need junk food in your life, so let it go with the help of these tips!
