Choosing the Right Workout Shoe

By Sara Butler

What you strap to your feet during your workout is about more than simply being fashionable. You should strive to find shoes that do more than match your favorite workout clothes, you need shoes that support you the right way based on the exercise you plan to do. Here are a few tips to help you find the right shoe for the right workout.

If You're Lifting Weights

For strength training and weightlifting, you need shoes with a flat, firm grip on the floor. This helps you to maintain proper form as you lift and offers your feet a safe grip on the floor at the same time, which is especially important if you're into lifting really heavy weights.

Those thick-soled, high-tech running shoes won't cut it in the weight room, so make sure to buy yourself a different shoe for the days you're working on getting swole. Barefoot styles or flat-soled shoes are going to be your best bet for an effective and save weight routine.

Group Exercise Classes

If you're taking a group workout class, then you need shoes that offer you plenty of support. After all, these classes usually involve shuffling from side to side or jumping, so you need a shoe that can accommodate all of that.

Choose shoes that have a good grip but also offer you enough support and cushioning. Shoes with a wide toe box are also going to be a good choice to help support optimal movement in class. Minimalist cross training shoes with ankle and arch support will do the job without adding bulk, plus they're light enough to help keep your feet from being overheated and feeling heavy.

Treadmill Workouts

If you love to get a workout on the treadmill, then you need the right shoes for that! Running shoes are the perfect choice for a little treadmill time since they offer you proper support. Just make sure you find the right shoe based on your running/walking style. If you overpronate, for example, then you need shoes that keep your feet from rolling inward. If you got to a shoe store that specializes in running shoes, they should be able to help you find the right shoe for you.

No matter how you work out, finding the right shoe is important. Always shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are at their largest so you can make sure to find a comfortable fit.
