Not All Carbohydrates Are Created Equal

By Sara Butler

You’ve probably read that complex carbohydrates are better for your health, but perhaps you’re confused about what a complex carb is exactly -- and why it’s so important. If so, then join the club! Learning about the subtle differences in the foods you eat can have a big impact on your health and wellness, so read on to find out about why and how to choose complex carbs over simple ones.

What is a Carbohydrate?

Carbohydrates are merely sugars that come in a couple of different forms -- complex and simple! The difference mainly lies in how quickly the carbohydrate is broken down, digested, and absorbed in your body. You need carbohydrates for your body to function optimally, especially your brain, which relies on the sugars for fuel.

What is a Simple Carbohydrate?

Simple carbs are often referred to as simple sugars and are found in many natural foods such as vegetables, milk, and fruit. It’s these simple sugars that naturally give foods a sweet taste, but they also raise blood sugar glucose levels fast, causing spikes that may lead to increased appetite or problems controlling blood sugar if you’re diabetic.

A lot of processed foods contain added sugars and you really have to be on the lookout for this form of carbohydrate if you’re worried about your general health and blood sugars. The National Institutes of Health suggest that adults don’t consume more than 70 grams of sugar a day. That’s because these sugars don’t provide any nutrition aside from energy -- they’re what has been called “empty calories” over the years and they’re definitely something to stay away from.

Complex Carbohydrates

Complex carbs are different than simple carbs on a chemical level. They contain long chains which mean they take longer to digest in the body than simple sugars, which aren’t linked together chemically. Complex carbs can be any starch, but when your chiropractor or nutritionists are speaking about complex carbs, what they really mean is whole grains.

Whole grains contain fiber and nutrients beyond carbohydrates. You should opt for whole grain versions of your favorite foods, such as bread, in order to help control your blood sugar and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Don’t avoid carbohydrates in your diet; just make sure you choose carbs that are whole grains to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your nutritional buck!
