Stay Healthy With Breakfast

By Rachel Carver

There's a reason why most of us have heard the phrase "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" at some point in our lives. The calories you consume throughout the day matter. But starting your day with breakfast can set you up for success.

Research suggests breakfast can regulate your blood sugar and help you concentrate at work or school. But combining hectic mornings with wanting more sleep can make it easy to skip this important meal. Not eating breakfast can make it harder to get the nutrition you need during the rest of the day.

Breakfast Provides Nutrients

Eating breakfast regularly has many benefits. Breakfast helps us start the day with a balanced meal that can stabilize blood sugar and regulate appetite for the rest of the day.

A recent study found that skipping breakfast can lead to nutrient gaps and poor diets in adults. Breakfast foods contain essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein. It is important to prioritize these nutrients in the morning so the body can function at its best all day.

If you skip breakfast because of a big meal you ate the previous night or to save calories for later, you might actually be setting yourself up to eat more. Waiting until you are starving can increase your chances of overeating.

Breakfast should consist of fat, protein, and carbs to maximize the nutritional value and to keep you feeling full longer. If you often skip breakfast because of time, try preparing food to grab as you walk out the door. Check out these make-ahead breakfast meals.

Baked Oatmeal

Combine oats, milk, egg, and chopped fruit of your choice. Bake this oatmeal in muffin tins you can reheat at the office. You can prep multiple servings and rotate them with other prepared items to change up your weekly breakfasts.

Overnight Oats

This versatile breakfast meal allows you to be creative with your favorite foods. Mix some oats, milk, and yogurt together in a jar or container to store in the fridge. Before you leave your house the next morning, add your favorite chopped fruit or nuts to the mix for a tasty breakfast ready to eat.

Hard Boiled Eggs

Boiled eggs can be combined with many breakfast items. Boil a dozen eggs on Sunday so they are ready for the week. Drop two eggs into your lunch bag with a container of yogurt. You can also eat them with a piece of whole wheat toast with some nut butter if you have a little more time or want a hot breakfast item.

Prioritizing breakfast can improve your overall health and help you stay on track with your balanced diet.
