Staying Healthy for the Start of School
By Donna Stark
The carefree days of summer are just about to end and we all know what that means, right? It means that in the near distant future, we get to look forward to the hustle and bustle of a busy school year and unfortunately, this year may come with its own set of challenges. Since many schools are turning to online and remote learning, many parents may be pulling double-duty. And as much fun as that sounds (not!), it's usually during these busy, stressful moments in our lives when we tend to get sick. A healthy immune system is critical for the months ahead so take a quick glance at the following suggestions on how you can keep yours functioning at an optimal level.
Start Taking Probiotics
An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but so do probiotics! Probiotics help to support the functions of both your digestive and immune systems. They inhibit the growth of "bad" bacteria and encourage the growth of "good" bacteria which helps to keep your insides healthy. Probiotics can also help promote the growth of natural antibodies in your system.
Consume Less Sugar
If you want to improve your immunity, you may need to change some things about your diet and the best change you can make is to avoid sugar and increase your consumption of nutrient-dense foods. Foods high in sugar typically contain little nutritional value and can actually deplete the nutrients that your body is storing! And fewer nutrients means your body needs to work harder to stay well.
Lose the Stress
We've already determined that the start of this school year may end up being more stressful than years past so be sure to stay on top of the stressors in your life! Daily stress can lead to headaches, muscle pain, and a weakened immune system and nobody is going to have time to get sick this fall. There's too much to handle! So find some balance in your days and do whatever is necessary to reduce as much of your stress as you can.
