Pain-Free Days for the Fall Season

By Donna Stark

Time really does fly when we are having fun, doesn't it? One minute we are enjoying summer and the next minute the leaves on the trees are changing colors. But that's not the only change we get to look forward to. We must also deal with how the changes to our daily schedules affects our overall well-being! Are you ready for that? Or more importantly, are your children? It doesn't take long for the complaints of back pain to begin surfacing once school starts so you need to do everything you can to reduce the risk of that occurring before it actually does occur. Here are two helpful tips from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.

The Proper Way to Carry Things

It isn't only children who suffer from backpack pain ... adults can experience it as well! If you or a loved one has a backpack, tote, or any other kind of bag to carry your stuff in, pay attention to how you are using it.  Here are some tips to follow.

  • Backpacks - Wearing a backpack incorrectly can lead to poor alignment and intense pain. Make sure your backpack has padded, adjustable straps, put your heavier items in the center of the bag so the weight is evenly distributed (don't overfill it!), place it between the top of your shoulders, pull it close to your body, and tighten the straps.
  • Bags and totes - When using a bag or tote, make sure you aren't overfilling it because too much weight can cause muscle strain and lead to permanent muscle weakness. It's important to switch sides frequently throughout the day.

The Proper Way to Sit

It's easy for your posture to fall apart when you have been sitting for a long time, isn't it? The body becomes tired, your shoulders start to slouch forward, and before you know it, you find yourself in a very awkward position. And while this position may be comfortable for a bit of time, if you sit in it for too long, it can lead to significant damage and pain. This is why you need to pay attention to your posture and take breaks when you feel yourself slipping. Place your feet flat on the floor, sit up straight, pull your shoulders back, and keep your head in a neutral position. Also, remember to take a break every 30 minutes or so to stand up and stretch.

Pain-Free Days Ahead

Life has gotten busy once again, so you will want to be your best! And you can do that by staying a step ahead of the pain and discomfort that may be heading your way by following the tips above. Have any more questions? See your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic for advice!
