How You Can Make Exercise a Habit
By Sara Butler
A lot of people talk themselves out of daily exercise because they think they just don’t have enough time. Here’s the thing: You do have enough time, you just need to make exercise a priority. But to make it a priority, you must first make it a habit -- which will make it a whole lot easier to do once that habit is established. Here are some tips to help you get started and stay committed to a new exercise plan.
Get Rid of the Past
This one may seem kind of strange, but it’s really time to throw away that pair of jeans you’ve not worn since your high school days. It’s normal to think about how you used to be -- how fit, how active -- but it’s really time to let the past go. You’ll never get motivated if you compare yourself to who you used to be and what you used to be able to do. Start today and make new goals for yourself.
Prepare
You already know deep down that you have the time to exercise; you just need to make it a part of your day. A great strategy to get this done is to write exercise down in your planner or on your calendar for the day. If you treat it as an important appointment, then you’ll find the time to get it done.
Start Off Slow
You can’t go from a couch potato to an athlete overnight, so start off with an exercise that’s in your wheelhouse. Walk for 20 minutes after dinner. It may not feel like the sweat-drenching exercise session you think you should be doing, but it’s a great place to start.
Bring the Family On Board
If you’re going to get in shape, then why not talk your family into it too. While your child rides a bike, walk briskly right next to them. Jog with your partner. Sign up for a 5K to walk together as a family. You’re more likely to stay committed if the whole family joins in!
Just Go
Even on the days you don’t feel like it, just show up. There’s a lot to mentally gain from going to the gym, walking at the park, or getting to your group exercise class even if your heart isn’t in it. You may find your motivation improves once you’re actually there.
You can make exercise work in your life if you use these tricks!
