Finding the Time to Exercise

By Donna Stark

Experts recommend that we get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each and every day, and for many people, that's not a problem. But if you find that your daily obligations and responsibilities are getting in the way and pulling you away from a normal fitness routine, it couldn't be more important to find those minutes wherever you can. Sure, this may require a proactive approach and some creativity, but with the suggestions below, you won't have any problems staying healthy and fit. Take a look.

Walk More

Whenever possible, choose to walk. Walking is extremely beneficial for your body and so easy to incorporate into your day. For example, you can park on the other side of the parking lot when you get to work, you can take the stairs instead of the escalator, and you can walk around the fields while your child is at practice. Every step counts and those steps will turn into precious minutes of movement when added up!

Take Advantage of 'Wasted' Minutes

Do you make it a habit to stand by the microwave and watch your food go around in circles while it cooks? How about when you are on the phone? Do you find yourself sinking into your couch while the other person goes on and on and on? Times like these are perfect to add a little extra movement into your day. Start with a few squats and then throw in some lunges. Or at the very least, use those few minutes to give your muscles a good stretch!

Turn Play Time Into Active Time

There is no one more active than your child, so why don't you take the jump and include yourself in their play? The next time you go to the park, avoid the urge to sit on the bench with the other parents. Start a game of tag or chase, bring some balls to kick and throw, or just follow your child around the play structure instead! Your body will feel better and your child will love it!

Finding Those Minutes

By taking advantage of every extra minute you have and keeping your body moving, those 30 minutes of exercise will add up quickly. In fact, it's so easy to do, you may not even realize when you hit your mark! So, get up and get moving. A few minutes here and a few minutes there will benefit you more than you could imagine. You just need to give it a try.
