4 Tips on Preventing Fall Recreation Injuries

By Brandi Swieter

Many student athletes participate in fall recreational activities. Football and cheerleading are two of the most common, but also two of the most dangerous. These sports can lead to injuries if students are not careful in their actions. With a few helpful tips, the prevention of injuries during fall recreation is possible.

Wear the Right Shoes

The shoes worn during a athletic contest can make a major impact on how that game is played. Football cleats are needed during football to help provide better grip when on the field. More injuries occur to the knees and ankles when tight or loose-fitting shoes get worn on the field, as they can cause a player to trip easily. Cleats should always fit comfortably. It’s best if players get a new pair each season to ensure they’re the right size and fit.

Warm Up and Cool Down

Certain exercises help to warm up the body and get the muscles ready to move during game time. Others work better during the cool-down period after the game. Both should get utilized to ensure athletes are doing what they can to keep their bodies in optimal condition both before and after they take the field.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key to keeping the body in ideal condition for recreational activities. Whether in the fall season or otherwise, players need to drink water during each game break to ensure their body has the fuel it needs to recuperate and recover quickly. Sweating during a game makes individuals lose fluids. Drinking water will replace what was lost and keep the body’s fluid levels correct.

Rest Any Previous Injuries

Players should never play through the pain. If there are previous injuries from a prior game, they need to be addressed and healed before that player is allowed to continue during the next session. Continuing to play with an injury can lead to further problems and worsening symptoms. Injured areas should remain elevated and get treated with ice immediately after they occur.

Some fall injuries cannot be prevented no matter how many preventative measures athletes take. Anyone who experiences an injury during their fall recreational activities should seek the assistance of a chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic. The extended hours and walk-in availability make it easy to walk-in after game time and get seen.
