A Chiropractor's Advice for Making Deliveries

By Brandi Swieter

UPS, FedEx, and countless other delivery services work overtime during the holiday season. Many drivers spend hours in their vehicles heading from one location to the next to deliver packages to expecting online shoppers. This can take a major toll on the back and body as people are often sitting in one position for long periods. Taking a chiropractor’s advice for making deliveries will help make the process smoother during the holidays, whether delivering packages for a living to friends and family.

Get Lumbar Support

Many delivery vehicles have uncomfortable seats that are not easy on the back. Getting some sort of lumbar support to add cushion to the lower back can help tremendously. Those who do not have the time or money to purchase a true lumbar support pillow can instead roll up a blanket or towel and place that behind the back to get the support needed.

Lift With the Legs

Delivery drivers don’t just drive goods around town. They also have to unload the items and leave them with the people who purchased them. Rather than lifting up boxes using the back muscles, it’s better to lift with the legs. This ensures extra strain isn’t put on the back, which would allow pain to set in easily. All heavy items should be handled with caution and taken to the house slowly so it does not take its toll on the body.

Perform Back Strengthening Exercises

All drivers should take some preventive measures to avoid back pain during the holidays by performing back strengthening exercises as much as possible in their free time. It is far easier to lift heavy items and withstand long periods of sitting if the back is strong enough to handle it.

Stretch After Exiting the Truck or Car

Many drivers may be in too much of a rush to meet job deadlines that they skip stretching when they get out of their vehicle. This can allow muscle fatigue to set in and prevent the body from handling the job duties as well as they could have. It’s best to stretch for at least a few seconds after exiting the truck each time, particularly after a long trip. It will help to eliminate some pain that’s been setting in and ensure the body remains in ideal condition for the rest of the job.

The holidays leave a lot of people with back pain and other troubles. Delivery drivers are particularly at risk for developing problems after sitting for long periods and working overtime. Any drivers in need of chiropractic care after finishing a day of work should head to The Joint Chiropractic during their extended hours to receive treatment.
