Foods That Contain Vitamin C

By Paul Rothbart

You can't be healthy without getting the proper amount of essential vitamins and minerals. All are important but none more so than Vitamin C. There are animals whose bodies can produce this nutrient but no such luck for humans. We have to ingest ours. Supplements can be helpful, but it's usually better to get nutrition from food. Fortunately, there are many delicious foods that are loaded with Vitamin C.

What Vitamin C Does

Vitamin C provides many health benefits to the body. It aids the body in producing neurotransmitters and other important compounds that are vital to the health of the heart, brain, muscle function, and nervous system. It also plays a role in the body's production of energy. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body. These harmful molecules attack cells and can cause many chronic diseases such as cancer. Absorbing iron and metabolizing iron are two other bodily functions Vitamin C helps with. It is recommended that adults get about 40 milligrams a day. With the right foods in your diet, this is not hard to do.

Fruits With Vitamin C

There are many fruits high in Vitamin C, chief among them, citrus fruits. There are 70 milligrams in a medium orange and 56 in a grapefruit. A medium glass of orange juice has 125 milligrams. Cantaloupe is another excellent fruit source of Vitamin C. A single slice contains about milligrams. One of the very best sources is kiwi. A single serving of the fuzzy little fruit from New Zealand has nearly all of the recommended daily allowance. Research has found that kiwi can significantly improve Vitamin C levels in blood plasma. Strawberries are also very high in Vitamin C.

Vegetables With Vitamin C

Vitamin C is usually associated with fruit. However, you can get plenty of it from many vegetables. One of the best sources is broccoli with one cup having as much Vitamin C as an orange. With all of the other nutrients broccoli contains along with Vitamin C, it is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. Bell peppers of all varieties and colors contain plenty of Vitamin C and A, as well as many other nutrients. The longer the bell pepper is kept on the vine, the higher the nutrition. Red bell peppers have 1.5 times more Vitamin C and nearly 11 times as much beta-carotene as the green variant. They are more than just a pretty color.

No question, Vitamin C is one of the most important nutrients for your overall health. It is contained in many fruits and vegetables and by keeping these in your diet you should be able to easily get all the Vitamin C your body needs.
