Do We Get Enough Sunlight in Winter?

By Tom Herrin

When the days grow shorter and the temperature is somewhat cooler, many of us seem to feel the need to withdraw ourselves and close ourselves off from the outside world.  Shutting out the sun and closing up the windows may seem logical, but it is not really the best of practices.  Most of us get plenty of sun when the days are longer as we spend more time outdoors and .  If we want to maintain our health all year long, we need to keep the sunlight coming on a regular basis.  It is an essential part of practicing a healthy lifestyle.

The Sun Can Strengthen Our Resistance to Disease

We hear a lot more, these days, about the need for resisting diseases.  It is no more important that it ever was, but the significance has been given a lot more attention.  Sunlight can play a big role in all of this.  Its abundant levels of Vitamin D is something that we need never be without.  This vitamin not only helps to promote stronger bones and resistance to inflammation but it also is believed to help fight several kinds of cancers.  Among them are cancers of the prostate, lungs, breast, pancreas, and more.

It May Contribute to a Longer Life

People can increase the length of their life by getting more sunlight.  According to one study of women, those who got the least amount of sun over a 20-year period had mortality rates that were higher than those who got more sun.  As a matter of fact, it was apparently two times higher.  This is certainly a major factor to consider when looking for anything to protect health.  Considering the zero cost of sunlight, it is pretty hard to make excuses as to why not allow more sunlight in the home.

Good Practices Can Be Simple

Many of us are constantly on the lookout for ways to support our health.  When we look at how simple it is to increase the amount of sunlight, there are really no reasons to continue to deny ourselves of it.  If nothing else, opening our blinds, or the shades, is an easy way to get just a few minutes more of sunlight.  Of course, another simple way is to get outdoors and soak up a little.  For me this is always a great way to feel a good pick-me-up.
