Are You a Red Married to a Blue?

By Tom Herrin

One of the greatest shocks to many people once they are married is discovering that they really don't think alike even though they may have thought it while dating.  The notion of being perfect for each other may not include living life on the same schedule.  As a matter of fact, some couples operate on entirely different schedules.  They still make it work even though they don't get up at the same time or share a workout.  We all have different persona schedules that are often dictated, at least partially, by our own internal clocks.  This may be more part of our biological make-up than habit.

No Good Guy, Bad Guy

Some things are simply not a matter of good or bad, right or wrong.  Our bodies often dictate  more than we may be aware.  It is believed that each of us has our own personal internal clocks.  This is something that appears to help regulate our systems.  It may tell us when to get up and when to be active.  For some, this is not even on a traditional 24-hour schedule.  That may make it particularly challenging.  A good thing is that we may still live together in harmony if we can understand one another better.

Day and Night Difference

When we were dating, my wife and I did everything together, though it was obvious she had trouble staying awake when it was late.  After marrying, I discovered that we were on opposite ends of the circadian rhythm schedules.  I preferred to get a later start and go all night long while she may be asleep by 8 or 9 and get up early.  I realized it was fine and worked well once we learned how to navigate the differences.  We all have differences.  That is what makes life a fun challenge.  Enjoying the best possible health may be largely dependent upon our ability to learn more about ourselves and go with it.

Make Changes Little by Little

It is not a bad idea to make a few changes to blend better with those we live with.  Gradually adjusting the alarm clock may help it to work without totally interfering with our personal internal clocks.  Seeking employment and other activities that work well with our schedule is exercising good judgment, not giving up.  While some of my kids love a morning workout, it is a beating for me, but it is OK.
