More Variety May Mean More Exercise

By Tom Herrin

Even though most of us know that we should have some kind of regular exercise each day, making sure that we do it can be a pretty big challenge.  Part of the reason may be that we get tired of some of the more routine exercises that can be pretty regimented.  For some, it is great and something they can rely on and measure as they go.  For others, it can seem to be a grinding kind of activity that can quickly become boring.  If you fall into the latter category, you may have much greater success with something that has greater variety.  As a matter of fact, if it is an activity that seems far enough from the mainstream, you may be able to exercise and not really realize it.

How About Hitting a Few Balls?

Unless you play something like adult baseball or softball, you likely have not been to a batting cage in some years.  If you  want to find something different, trying to see how well you can hit a ball under various circumstances can be a fun challenge.  It is also a bit more exercise than you may remember.  As you really get into it, you may find that you enjoy going once or twice a week.  The more you try, the better the workout.

Have You Tried Standup Paddleboard Yoga?

Some things we may have seen but have no idea what is going on.  This sport requires some skill, balance, and flexibility.  If you have ever participated in any kind of yoga, you may be aware that striking, and holding, a pose can be more strenuous than it looks.  With this, you are also mixing the water with other exercises.  If you are looking for something different, this may be it.

Rock Climbing Can Be Fun

With some of the artificial surfaces around today, rock climbing can be more readily available than you may think.  There are climbing walls at many playgrounds as well as some gyms or fitness centers.  You will want to practice before you get out in the real natural setting.  With this, you will use a lot of muscles as you lift yourself, balance, and hang on all at the same time.  I have done a little of this, and it is really fun and a pretty good challenge.
