Be Open to the Moment: Try Serendipity
By Sandy Schroeder
The dictionary defines serendipity as "the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way." When you bump into an old friend while out shopping, or discover a bank error in your favor, that's serendipity. Good things that pop up by chance are not hard to take. So how do we get more of them? Start by taking a closer look at your world.
WellAndGood.com tells us we need to be open to the moment and more aware of everything around us to recognize opportunities when they show up. Learn to spot the good things whenever and wherever they appear.
Live with an open mind - The people that I know who have made the most of their lives have always been willing to learn and change as life changed around them. They never seem to age because they are always eager to see what's new and what it can do. They are well-informed, flexible, and fun to be around. New jobs, better ideas, fun places and special people are all out there if we look.
Open your eyes and pay attention - Sometimes we settle so far into a groove that we miss everything that is happening around us. As we move through the day, we may not spot new people, ideas, or opportunities that are right under our nose. When you pause and look around, you may discover new ways to work faster or interact better. Be open to what's out there.
Put natural curiosity to work - Inventions often occur because someone asks how did this happen? Then they go on to ask more questions and apply the information to create new something new. Use your curiosity to see what makes the world tick and then see what it can do for you. Always be willing to check your perspective and rethink the situation.
Collect connections - As you run through the day, pay attention to the people that you meet. Down the road, they may have just the information or services that you or your family need. Collect names and phone numbers and take notes. Use new connections to expand your world to make more contacts and extend your reach. When I make a new contact, it often leads me to several more.
Our world is filled with details. Why not practice serendipity to link them altogether?
