How to Stop Avoiding Exercise and Finally Get Fit

By Genevieve Cunningham

Unless you really likes exercise, there's a good chance that you spend a fair amount of time avoiding the gym. It's a normal behavior that most of us engage in from time to time. And most of the time, it's not a problem to skip on occasion. But when you constantly skip your workout, avoidance becomes an issue. And if you really want to get fit, it's definitely an issue. If you're ready to break your habit of avoiding your workout, take a look at these tips to help you regain your motivation and get moving in the right direction.

Pay in Advance

If you're a stickler for money, paying for a gym or a class in advance may be enough to get you there. Find a class that really interests you, pay for one or two classes upfront, and then put it on your schedule. Unless you don't mind wasting your money, you're more likely to show up to these classes because you've already paid.

Get an Accountability Buddy

Accountability is the real hard part of maintaining an exercise routine. Some people are fantastic about being accountable to themselves. They have an intrinsic desire to get fit. But most of us need a little bit of help. This is where an accountability buddy can really come into play. Find a friend who is also interested in getting fit. Ask them to take on the challenge with you. Together, find some classes or workouts that look interesting and challenging to the both of you. Then hold each other accountable. Just make sure that you choose someone who is in it for the long haul, so that you don't end up skipping together instead of using each other as ongoing motivation.

Do Exercise That You Like

One thing that many people forget about exercise is that it is supposed to be fun. If you don't like an exercise, don't do it. Don't force yourself to run if you despise the thought. Don't do yoga if you spend the whole time wishing it was over. Just choose an activity that suits your interests. And then do that activity until you find another that is appealing to you. If you make it fun, you’re way more likely to actually complete it. A challenge doesn't have to be boring or dreadful. It can be fun and challenging at the same time. So if you're ready to get fit, do it in a fun way so that you actually find success at the end.

Anyone who wants to get fit can do it. But it's not always easy. If you are having trouble making it to your workout, use these tips to help you stop avoiding the inevitable. With some hard work and dedication, you can make exercise a priority and get in the best shape of your life before you know it.
