Can You Drink Wine Without the Guilt?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Wine. It seems that most people either love or hate this grown-up drink. But if you love it, then you definitely want to enjoy a glass (or two!) on an almost daily basis. Of course, this probably brings up some health concerns. Is wine healthy? Or is your love for wine affecting your health in a negative fashion? It's a complicated issue. If you're curious whether you can continue drinking wine without the guilt, take a look at some facts you need to know.

You Have to Watch the Calories

Like anything else, wine contains calories. Each wine will be slightly different depending on color, blend, and brand, but they all have calories. If you drink too much, it can lead to weight gain. It definitely contributes to your overall caloric intake for the day, and it should be factored in if you're counting calories. If you choose to drink wine, make sure you're not consuming hundreds of calories more than you intend.

Alcohol is Still Toxic

It's important to remember that alcohol is still a toxin to the body. The body doesn't like it. And it usually tells us by making us feel bad. When we consume it, our livers get straight to work trying to detox the body. Though it's not the absolute worst thing to put in your body, it doesn't necessarily belong either. If you're going to opt for wine, do so with the understanding that wine (alcohol!) is a toxin -- so be careful!

It Might Have Some Benefits

Research suggests that red wine might bring benefits into your life. It's thought that red wines contain antioxidants that are good for the heart and the brain. The effects of these antioxidants are so strong, many suggest having a glass of red wine every single night! And if you're comparing the benefits of wine versus other forms of alcohol, wine will likely win almost every time.

So can you drink wine guilt-free? In short, no. Because of the nature of wine, there are always going to be some drawbacks to consumption. Can you still drink it? Of course. Just be smart about when, what kind, and how much you consume, and you can enjoy your wine without too much thought over poor health or negative consequence.
