Is Running or Walking the Right Choice for You?

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to exercise, many of us are looking for things that are low cost and effective. This search leaves many settling on two good options: walking and running. Both of these choices take very little in the way of equipment, and yet they really help us get in better shape -- with muscle growth, weight loss, and improved stamina. But which one is right for you? Is walking really enough, or should you pick up the pace and go for a run? If you're trying to decide between the two, take a look at these benefits of each so that you can make an informed decision regarding your workouts and health.

The Benefits of Walking

Walking is a good, solid exercise. It brings about the same benefits as most other workouts -- burned calories, stronger muscles, longer endurance, increased flexibility. But it brings these benefits with less stress. Walking is a low-impact exercise, which means it's easier on the joints and a good choice for people of all ages and backgrounds. It's also easy to add to your life. You'll need shoes and a place to walk and you're good to go. If you want something a little easier but still effective, walking can be an excellent choice.

The Benefits of Running

Running works. It's a workout that feels challenging. It's a workout that makes us feel sore. For getting in shape, it's a really good choice. Though running brings similar benefits as other workouts -- the calorie burn, stronger muscles, less fat, better endurance -- it also brings more stress than some lower impact workouts. It can be hard on the joints, as the pounding of your feet on the ground can create too much impact. It can also cause injury if you fail to warm up properly, and if approached too quickly, it can cause burnout. Running is really good for your health if you start your habit with longevity in mind.

Which Should You Choose?

Whether you choose to run or walk, you'll be making a good choice. If you're looking for something lower impact, walking is your go-to. If you want a bigger challenge and aren't in danger of injury, running may be a better option. The choice is actually completely up to you! Choose the one that fits your goals and lifestyle, and go after it with all you have.

Running and walking are both wonderful ways to engage the body and get in better shape. Buy some supportive shoes, find a trail, and get moving. Whether you take it slow or speed it up a bit, you'll be making good choices and leading your body toward better health overall.
