Have You Revisited Your Disaster Plan Lately?

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people tend to become pretty complacent when they are not challenged.  The most recent hurricane scares in the gulf area should have made people sit up and take notice.  When you live by the ocean as you do, the possibility of storms is always in the back of your mind.  Even if you have never experienced one yourself, they can come at any time.  Many places have been hit where people thought they were protected.  I have been to a few hurricane sites to help clean up and all of the people we saw couldn’t believe they had been hit so hard.  Having an emergency plan is critical for anyone to improve survival chances.

Know What You Need

It is pretty well a given that people need food and water.  Bottled water in quantities that can last for at least a few days should be included in packing.  Food that does not require cooking is another essential.  First aid supplies should be on hand and everyone should know how to use them.  Copies of important papers should also be included.  These would be things such as birth certificates and insurance papers.  They may be useful once people get settled, particularly if they have been displaced.

Be Ready To Evacuate

If conditions are so serious that an evacuation order is given, it is important that no time is wasted in leaving.  This means that all of the previously mentioned supplies should be packed in some kind of container that can be easily picked up and carried out on very short notice.  Five-gallon buckets work well, as do several other kinds of things.  These containers should be kept in some place that is visible and has easy access.  Some people pack one for each family member.

Maintain Good Health

It is important to remember that medical attention may be hard to find when disasters occur.  If people strive to eat right, get enough rest, and get enough exercise, they may be able to avoid preventable diseases such as high blood pressure and some kinds of diabetes.  Make good health a part of your family’s plan, and it can serve more than one purpose.  If you haven’t reviewed your plan lately, now would be a great time to do so.

It's also important to be in good health in order to withstand the turmoil your life will be in should a disaster arise. Don't take your health for granted, either. It may save your life.
