All Join Hands and Dance for Health

By Tom Herrin

Chances are when people think about getting in shape, or getting more exercise, the thing that comes to mind most often is what kind of exercise routine is next.  Everybody knows about a lot of the lessons and plans that are out there. It seems to me that big numbers of people are into many of these camps. I see them scattered around in many of the parks at various times of the day.  They seem busy doing all kinds of things trying to work up a sweat. For those who don’t quite fit that picture, there are many more less stressful activities. Many of these are far more casual and may be of higher interest. Even though it is unfamiliar to a lot of people, square dancing is still alive and well in many places.  It can provide a good way to have fun while staying in shape.

It Can Work for Those with More Guarded Health

People with some health conditions may be able to safely participate in square dancing.  They should always check with a healthcare provider who is familiar with their health first. If they get the green light, the steady movements in square dancing can help with a good workout.  If they become overly tired, they may simply sit one out.

It Can Keep the Brain Stimulated

Helping to have steady activity for the mind can work like exercise.  It can help to deter problems such as dementia. It can also stimulate other mental processes and functions.

Any activity that can help to protect the brain in this way is a good investment of time.  As people respond to the calls and instructions, they must translate this to the feet and body.

It Is a Good Opportunity to Socialize

In square dancing, you have no choice but to interact with others as you dance.  There are more groups around who participate in square dancing than you may be aware.  They usually offer lessons and weekly dance sessions. Many people go all out in dress and other things as they get involved.  If you are in the market for something different in the way of exercise, look into square dancing. It can be fun for the entire family and become a real bonding experience.  It is also a great way to meet like-minded people who may want to share the same interests.
