Take Advantage of Your Activities to Boost Health
By Tom Herrin
When anyone tries to begin a program of personal improvement for their health, too often they seem to feel as if they have to go big and large. This really is not the case at all. Simply doing what they already do on a daily basis may be one of the best ways to protect themselves from blood pressure issues, heart disease, some cancers, and a few other things. It is not so much that someone needs to start something new but just do a better job of following through with the regular activities. It is not so much a battle as it is a challenge to become more aware.
Minutes of Activity Can Add Up to Good Things
According to a study released by the journal Hypertension, a group of people ages 55 to 80 who were sedentary and overweight or obese were observed. When they walked just 30 minutes each morning, their blood pressure remained good all day. Even beyond that, women saw greater results when they walked three minutes every half hour. There is certainly no great amount of stress in doing that, but the results are good.
Retirement Should Be No Excuse
Many times, when people retire, they seem to withdraw from doing almost any kind of activity. This can be a huge mistake. It will be pretty difficult to enjoy that long anticipated time off if they have too many health issues to enjoy it. The recommendation is that those 65 or older get a minimum of 2 1/2 hours of moderate exercise per week in order to protect their health. The unfortunate thing is that it is estimated that fewer than 20 percent of those in that group actually get that much. They may be failing to take advantage of an easy opportunity to preserve health.
Make Up Your Own Program
Establishing a routine that can work to help support your health is not that hard. The things you do on an everyday basis may be the best start you can have. Most people have to walk or move and do something. The best thing to do is add a few steps and minutes to those things. For me, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking as far as possible from the front door to a store, or doing some other similar thing can go a long way toward getting some exercise. If you will just become a little more conscious of what you do, it may work well for you.
