How Do You View Disease Prevention?

By Tom Herrin

Of all the ways to combat illnesses, such as the current pandemic, the old standard about prevention being the best cure generally still holds true.  Many people have done more in the way of supporting their health with supplements, or so it seems.  In some cases, however, something more is needed.  The rapid development of vaccines have been unprecedented, and many of those who are most at risk have already taken one.  Once this first line of people have been given theirs, and the supply is sufficient, vaccines will be offered to the general public.  That includes most of the rest of us.  We will be faced with a big choice.  Do we take it or pass?

Vaccines Can Offer Protection

The first vaccine was simple but, generally, successful.  Never before had anyone been given something that could actually prevent people from contracting a disease on a wide-scale basis.  Smallpox was a dangerous threat that was greatly reduced by a vaccine.  In today's world, we have vaccines that work against a big variety of diseases.  Tetanus was once a major cause of death in war but is no longer a factor.

Vaccines Can Threaten Security

As much as any of us wants to feel protected, there have been some problems with vaccines.  Much of it may have been associated with a situation in which people have had problems with their immune systems.  Some of the more primitive vaccines were based largely on the virus itself, either live or dead.  Other issues often had to do with a substance, such as eggs, used in manufacturing the vaccine.  Some of the reactions have been mild such as soreness, fever, body aches, and others have been more severe such as loss of some senses and seizures.  For those with a history of bad reactions, caution must be used in taking a new one.

The Better We Prepare, the Better We Will Be

There is a lot of information available to help us make the best decision possible.  Identifying the best sources of information is important.  I would avoid taking advice from those who may still think the earth is flat.  Most of the new vaccines are much higher tech.  They may be designed to help your body recognize the virus and fight it off accordingly.  They pretty much stay away from using the actual virus or changing your chromosomes.
