3 Ways to Encourage a Spouse to Get Healthy
By Genevieve Cunningham
Health is an incredibly personal thing. When you decide to change your health for the better, it’s a decision that you make on your own. And if you don’t make it on your own, it’s unlikely to stick. But once the switch has been flipped and you understand the positive effects of getting healthy, it’s hard not to want everyone you love to join in as well. And this is especially true if you have a spouse. Unfortunately, because of the personal nature of health and wellness, not everyone is on the same page at the same time. If you want to encourage your spouse to live a healthier lifestyle, take a look at these gentle tips to get you started.
Lead by Example
No one wants to be nagged, so don’t do it. Instead, try simply leading by example. If you want your spouse to work out, get up and work out. If you want them to eat healthier, improve your own diet. You can’t force them to make a different decision, but you can show them the way by doing it yourself. And with some time, maybe they’ll notice the positive effects that it makes on you and decide on their own to join.
Invite Them Along
While you can’t make them come along, you can certainly invite them. Going for a run? Ask them if they’d like to join. Hitting the gym? Ask if they would be interested in checking out the weight room or a class. And it helps even more if you find something you think they might like and then invite them. If they like biking, try SoulCycle together. If they like martial arts, check out the kickboxing class. Just make sure that you don’t get mad if their answer is no. Keep on asking, but allow them to make their own ultimate decision.
Give Them Compliments
Don’t forget that you can catch far more flies with honey. If your spouse finally decides to eat better or work out, pay them a compliment. Let them know that they look good, look full of energy, or look healthier. Compliments go a long way, so let them know what they’re doing right instead of hounding them about what they could be doing better.
It can be frustrating when you’re trying to be healthy and your spouse isn’t interested. But there are ways to encourage them to join the healthy lifestyle. Try these tips to get you started. Stay away from demands and ultimatums and be positive. With the right encouragement and some ongoing positivity, you may be able to convince them that healthy is better for everyone, and get them interested in leading a healthier lifestyle together.
