Avoiding Movement May Build Health

By Tom Herrin

Thinking about all those ways people have been taught to improve their health usually includes plenty of ways to move.  Running, swimming, biking, or playing some game all come to mind as the things that should be considered as worthwhile pursuits.  Without a doubt, all of these are helpful and people should actually find ways to become involved in some or many of these. There are alternatives, however, for those who may have reasons why movement is a challenge.  Isometrics are a way of resistance training that does not rely on movement but still brings good results. What was really popular a few years ago is now making somewhat of a comeback.

They May Be a Way of Using More Muscles

It is difficult for many people to incorporate a large number of muscles when they are exercising.  Isometrics apparently are pretty successful in doing this. When some activity is able to use more muscles it is called activation.  Isometrics are a way of doing this. They are generally considered to be capable of involving more muscles than most other types of exercise.

They May Increase Muscle Strength

A lot of people struggle trying to improve their muscle strength.  Pumping iron or doing some other kind of strenuous activity has long been considered the standard for such.  When people do isometrics, they are able to hold a muscle contraction for quite some time, they can accomplish their goal without the chance of straining muscles or injuring joints.  It seems that the longer they hold muscle contractions, the lower the blood flow and the longer some of those natural elements that cause muscles to grow remain in them.

They May Improve Flexibility

Isometrics can be a great way to stretch muscles.  They do this by placing them under stress for an extended period of time.  This increases blood flow as well as their range of motion. Holding a position while providing resistance works.  I have done isometrics with pretty good success. I found that they were a good way to warm up, build muscle in targeted areas, and do all of this in a short period of time with little space.  If you are looking for that right thing to focus your energies on while boosting your health, try doing a few isometrics. You may be surprised at the results.
