You Should Be Eating These Foods!
By Sara Butler
It seems as if every few months a new fad diet comes out and takes the world by storm. With them comes a deluge of foods you “should” be eating and foods you shouldn’t. While nutrition science is constantly updating and finding out new things, there are some foods that have stood the test of time and still come out on top as healthy. Yet many people may avoid certain foods due to rumors or bad information. Here’s a list of healthy foods you need to make sure are on your grocery list – because they’ve never gone out of style!
Sardines
Sardines? Yes! These fish get a bad reputation because they come in a can but they’re actually incredibly healthy for you. They're full of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids as well as Vitamin D – thanks to the consumption of the whole fish, bones and all. Another plus is that sardines are low on the food chain, so for seafood, they’re some of the least contaminated you can find. Larger fish eat smaller fish and soak up all their toxins – sardines don’t have that problem!
Oatmeal
Simple, old-fashioned oatmeal is still a healthy staple. It’s filled with fiber that helps reduce bad cholesterol and helps to keep you full long after you’ve eaten. It’s a carbohydrate that releases slowly into your bloodstream, so it won’t spike your blood sugar and cause a crash later on. So go ahead and enjoy that bowl of oatmeal in the morning.
Lentils
Lentils can be put in just about anything. Throw in their low cost and you can see how the versatile lentil has a lot of applications! A serving of cooked lentils will supply you with nearly 10 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber. They also happen to be a great source of folate and iron.
Kale
Kale may be in vogue right now but that’s because it’s so darn good for you! Sometimes fads do justice to foods! Kale is full of antioxidants and Vitamin A, which help promote healthy skin and eyes along with supporting a healthy immune system. It also is a great source of fiber, and one serving will provide you with as much Vitamin C as an orange!
Foods fade in and out of popularity but some foods stand the test of time. You can’t go wrong with these true blue dinner winners!
