The Worst Pieces of Health Advice

By Sara Butler

People are full of good intentions, but those good intentions aren’t always backed up by facts. A lot of information out there is reliable, but there are also a lot of pieces of health advice that are outdated, inaccurate, and just plain dangerous. Here are some of the worst pieces of health advice out there -- feel free to correct someone if they ever try to give you these tidbits of health advice.

Natural Sweeteners Are Better Than Sugar

Dietary guidelines for Americans limit the amount of sugar you get over the course of the day. Health experts suggest that sugar accounts for less than 10 percent of your calories in a day and here’s the kicker -- it doesn’t matter what form that sugar comes in!

Sugars labeled as natural are no different than white sugar and no sugar is a source of minerals or vitamins your body needs. While it’s OK to enjoy the foods you love within reason, you need to also recognize that all sugars are treated by your body in the exact same way no matter where they come from.

Only a Detox Will Flush Your System

Feeling run down and tired happens to everyone, and it will only be worse if you fuel your body with a bunch of junk food. But the answer to your problems doesn’t lie in a detox diet. Your body is already incredibly efficient when it comes to removing toxins from your body. Your liver, kidneys, intestines, and lungs do a great job. While a detox or juice cleanse may help you get a short-term energy boost, it’s not going to help you in the long run. The best course of action is to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet.

As Long as You Stick to a Calorie Plan, Eat Whatever You Want

A lot of people think that a calorie is just a calorie, but that’s not true. Your body processes junk food differently than it processes healthy food. Junk food can mess up the natural hormone signals between your body and brain that signal when you’re full. So, if you want to reach a healthy weight and stay there, you have to lay off the junk!
