How to Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes

By Sara Butler

Type 2 diabetes has become all too common in the United States. Even though it's common, it's preventable -- and reducing your risk isn't as difficult as you may think. Here are some easy ways you can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and stay healthy.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes occurs when there either isn't enough insulin for the body to use or the insulin cannot be used efficiently. Both of these things lead to high blood glucose levels that are a danger to your health. That's why it's important to be proactive with lifestyle changes so you don't develop type 2 diabetes.

Change Your Plate

This tip doesn't have anything to with what you eat, but how you eat. You can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by using smaller plates, cups, and bowls when you eat. Many people have a tendency to finish everything on their plate even when they feel full. You can reduce the number of foods you eat by simply serving yourself less. If you use smaller plates to do that, then it won't look like you're eating less and you'll walk away feeling satisfied.

Get More Magnesium

Magnesium plays a big role in your body's ability to produce and utilize insulin. Many people who develop diabetes also happen to have a magnesium deficiency. So, make sure to eat foods high in magnesium such as dark green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other vegetables such as pumpkin.

Quit Smoking

Smoking has a lot of negative health effects, one of which is an increase in risk for diabetes. Smokers also have a more difficult time managing their diabetes than non-smokers do, so use that as inspiration to find a way to quit.

Exercise

When you exercise you help your body to maintain a healthy weight. Since obesity is the leading risk factor for type 2 diabetes, you can see why exercise is so important. Find ways to work more movement into your day. Try a walk after dinner or taking the kids to the park. Whatever exercise you choose, know that as little as 90 minutes of exercise per week can make a difference in your health.

Don't be a part of the statistic of type 2 diabetes. Instead, take control of your health!
