Sleep and Low Back Pain

By Sara Butler

Back pain isn't fun during the day. When you mix it with trying to sleep at night, it can be even worse to deal with. Many people who deal with back pain report that the pain they experience at night wakes them up as frequently as six times throughout the night. If you have trouble falling asleep and staying that way due to back pain, then the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have a few tips to help you sleep better with back pain.

Change Positions

Some sleep positions are worse for your back and neck than others. If you struggle with back pain, then it's best to avoid positions such as stomach sleeping. But strategically placed pillows can help to relieve stress and strain on your back. If you're a back sleeper, use a pillow under your knees to take the pressure off your lower back and a pillow that supports your neck but doesn't prop your head up. If you're a side sleeper, then hug a pillow to your chest and place a pillow between your knees. That should help your back to feel a bit better as you sleep.

Need a New Mattress?

If your back is sore and stiff at night, then it might be the fault of your mattress. A good mattress is only good for 8-10 years or so. If your mattress is older than 10, then it's time to think about getting a new one. If you're unsure what type of mattress would be best for you, then talk to the chiropractors at The Joint. They may have some suggestions that can help to steer you in the right direction.

See the Chiropractor

Seeing the chiropractor regularly for hands-on chiropractic adjustments can help your body to function as it should. They find and eliminate joint dysfunctions that can make back pain worse. So if you're struggling with back pain, then make sure you're sharing that information with your chiropractor and fully taking advantage of the services they offer to help you stay healthy.

Move More

If you have back pain, then it may seem like a bad idea to move more. The truth is that moving more will help you to sleep better at night and also help to strengthen the muscles that work to support your back. Exercise also helps you to be more flexible, which also helps reduce your risk of injury that can contribute to back pain.

If back pain is keeping you from getting proper rest, then come to The Joint Chiropractic today.
