Take Control Step by Step
By Sandy Schroeder
In today's world, it's easy to feel off balance, but what about the days when everything seems to be out of control? Kids get sick, deadlines change, and new problems just keep turning up.
When you find yourself bouncing from one problem to another, as you cope with family, finances and work, it's time to stop, take stock, and find some new answers.
Where to Begin
Begin where you are - Take an hour, a day or a weekend away and think through your values, wants and needs. Consider where you are and where you want you and your family to be. Pin down who and what really counts in your life.
Examine your dreams - Then compare reality to see what you should be doing to make the two agree. If you look closely, you may be actually within reach of some of your goals if you just keep going.
Imagine a different life - With all of the turbulence in today's world, it's easy to just slip into a groove and stay there, but it may be time to consider different worlds that you might enjoy. Consider climate, location and overall comfort as you think about where you live and what you and your family enjoy the most. You may want to do a few weekend trips to try on different lifestyles and locations.
Figure out what motivates you - You may need new projects, new challenges, a steady flow of work, or new events in your life. Think about where you are happiest and then focus on expanding that part of your life.
Stop trying to control everything - Face reality and recognize the things in your world that cannot be controlled. Learning to be flexible can be a wonderful habit as more things get done, less friction occurs, and each day just gets a little easier.
Show up to get the job done - When life is too frustrating it's easy to slow down and even lag a little. Take a close look at your schedule and your commitments and rethink your workload to stay up to speed.
Then Start Living
Start each day fresh with a good breakfast and try for a sound night sleep each night. In-between, reach out to connect with friends and family to have fun and support each other.
- Create some quiet time each day to really relax
- Get outside and get away from all of the commotion
- Add a few treats or surprises for you and your loved ones
As you try out new ideas, see what works and what does not. Just keep reshaping everything to get the best fit and enjoy the results.
