Improving Health Goals for Better Wellness

By Brandi Swieter

Setting health goals is an important step toward improving wellness. Having a set list of items to accomplish helps a person better reach their objectives. Whether someone wants to improve their fitness or another person aims to lose weight, making proper goals is key in making these accomplishments.

Set Realistic Goals

Having an unrealistic goal that will be nearly impossible to accomplish does not do a person any favors. It is far better to set a realistic goal that is attainable. The objective of quitting smoking is far too general. Lowering the amount of cigarettes to just two packs per week to start with would be more realistic. This goal can change as time goes on to help reach the final objective.

Make One Change at a Time

Most accomplishments cannot be made without multiple components going into getting it done. It’s important to make just one change at a time to help meet these goals instead of trying to do everything at once. Managing various components at one time would be too difficult to accomplish and could result in people skipping out on their goals early because of the stress. Making just one change at a time makes it easier to tackle.

Pick Aerobic Exercises

If exercising more is a goal, be sure to make it the most worthwhile. Lifting weights may burn a few calories and improve muscle mass, but it won’t do much for losing weight or improving health overall. Aerobic exercises are the better choice because they get oxygen flowing and the heart pumping. These types of exercises are beneficial for weight loss, cardiovascular health, and overall health. It’s one of the better goals to set when aiming to improve fitness.

Choose a Meaningful Goal

Another person may have informed you of a goal you need to reach. If a significant other points out your weight, for example, you may get the urge to start working on losing some. Though this may be enough to try reaching the goal at first, it won’t provide any motivation to make it last. The goal should meaningful to the individual and something they actually want to do for themselves if they’re going to stick with it.

Improve your current health goals to improve your wellness. Saying you want to lose 100 pounds is not realistic. Specifying that you want to lose two pounds per week is a better objective.
