Keeping Your Back Healthy During Summer

By Donna Stark

Warmer temperatures and extended vacations are a welcomed sign that summer has arrived, but one sign of summer that isn't as welcomed is the pain we may feel from an injured back. Overextending ourselves with work around the house, traveling to the far corners of the country, and participating in more outdoor sports than we do in the winter can definitely take its toll on our bodies. We are generally more active during this time of year than we are the others and our backs can certainly vouch for that, don't you agree? But there are some steps you can take that will lighten the load with everything you do so you can enjoy the next few months to the fullest!

Summertime Safety Tips

It seems that our backs are stressed and strained at every turn during the summer and that can result in pain, stiffness, and complete misery. It's important to become aware of the situations that can pose a risk for developing back pain and take the appropriate steps to avoid that from happening. Let's take a look at a few of the most common instances.

  • Work around the house - Cleaning the garage and taking care of the yard work can definitely put a damper to your fun on certain days but don't let it put a damper to the entire summer because you injured your back! Be mindful with how you lift and carry items, focus on moving your body with intention, and avoid any abnormal twisting while you work.
  • Family vacations - Whether you are planning a day trip to the aquarium or a week-long trip to another country, the last thing you want to be worried about is back pain. So be careful and use proper lifting techniques when you lift those suitcases and bags or when you bend over to pick up a child, and take plenty of breaks to stretch while on the road or in the airplane. It's important to be aware of the strain your actions may potentially place on your back.
  • Summertime sports - Summer is the time for golf, tennis, and water sports, but if you aren't careful, it can also be a time for heating pads, bedrest, and doctor visits. Be sure to warm up before you start your activity with some stretching or a quick walk, take plenty of breaks to avoid fatigue and excessive strain, and know your body's capabilities and limitations. Sure, it's a time to relax and have fun, but you will want to do so with your complete safety in mind.

Enjoying the Best Time of the Year

No matter what you have planned for the months ahead, you certainly don't want one bad instance to ruin the rest of your summer. So take the time to prioritize your safety and exercise good judgment. You certainly won't regret doing so! Hope you have a happy summer!
